The cape design has become an American classic. Capes come in a variety of sizes and forms, with and without roof dormers, varying degrees of roof pitch from steep to shallow and exterior trim detailing from simple to ornate.

This design reflects the proportions and detailing of early capes built in the mid 1700’s. Its street façade is simple and symmetrical with two windows, a rustic plank door and large central chimney. Despite their simplicity, good early capes have a particular charm, character and coziness that results from their qualities of form, proportion and human scale. On the side elevation, we have taken great care to retain these qualities while adding the modern day requirements for two car storage. A low shed-roofed woodshed at the breezeway encloses the space and adds a functional element of human scale to this entrance.

The attached garage is purposefully small to keep it in scale with the house, but quite adequate for two full sized cars. A lean-to shed at the side of the garage further breaks down its scale and provides additional storage or shop space. Despite its compact appearance, this home has a very comfortable family floor plan. It has two well proportioned bedrooms and a master bedroom with a fireplace. A full bath on the second floor and a half bath on the first. A large eat-in country kitchen, with a fireplace to keep it cozy, will be a center of activity. A second fireplace warms the living room and a separate dining area open to the kitchen rounds out the plan. To retain this design’s air of antiquity, we suggest a dark black-brown stain for the siding and trim and barn red for the window sash. The roofs should be sawn cedar or a dark brown-tone asphalt and the chimney should be faced with used or antique style brick.

First Floor: Eat-in kitchen with fireplace, living room with fireplace, bedroom (#1) or study, rear entry mudroom with half bath.

Second Floor: Bedroom (#2), full bath and master bedroom (#3) with a fireplace.
