The simple front façade of this modified Classic Cape with its steeply pitched roof, large center chimney and wide plank front door is reminiscent of designs from the early colonial period. The New England cape represents an architectural form which has become a standard in residential design with no equal.
This particular home reflects exterior lines and details common in primitive capes from the early 18th century.

Its street façade is simple and asymmetrical with four windows, a rustic plank door and large central chimney on the main body and a small ell stretching off the right side. Well drawn early capes have a particular charm, character and coziness, often difficult to achieve with a large house. Despite its size, this custom home has a very comfortable family layout. The first floor plan offers a large eat-in country kitchen with a fireplace making it a center of activity. A well proportioned living room is warmed by a second fireplace, adjacent to the dining area. A half bath and laundry area in the mudroom connector lead from the main house to the two bay carriage shed. Finally, the addition of a first floor master bedroom suite with full bath and walk-in closet make this design a perfect choice for empty-nesters and smaller families.

This home has a pair of well proportioned bedrooms that share a full bath on the second floor. The hallway provides closet storage, making practical use of the low eave. Across the connector, the large room above the garage is accessible by means of a heated stair from the mudroom and offers an ideal space for an office or studio.

This home would look most authentic in a monochromatic finish of either barn red or a dark black-brown stain for both the siding and trim. The roofs should be sawn cedar or a quality antique-style asphalt shingle and the chimney should be built as 4’ square to stand 6’ off the ridge and be faced with used or antique style brick.
