The roots of the Half Cape design date back to 17th century settlements located on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Sometimes called the “half house”, the half cape evolved from single room structures that served as “starter houses” for these early inhabitants. As families grew and space requirements increased, The one room central core was expanded by additions to its sides and rear.
The Wellfleet represents my interpretation of an early, expanded half house design. For this home, I have added 2 wings to the center core, a master bedroom suite on the left and a gathering room to the right. The plan is designed to maximize first floor living space and provide all the amenities for a couple to live comfortably without ever venturing to the second floor.
The first floor plan contains a large open, combined dining/living room space with a fireplace. A half bath services this first level. The kitchen boasts a triangular counter with breakfast bar and opens into the ell gathering room with optional cathedral ceiling. In addition, the kitchen area offers a pantry closet and convenient laundry facilities, hidden behind folding doors. The Master Suite is also located on the first floor. The bedroom contains a small linen closet, a large walk-in closet and a full bath with separate shower, Jacuzzi tub and double vanity. The second floor contains two sizable bedrooms with full closets. They share a full bath and two additional hallway closets. At the top of the stairs is a common loft area with skylights, providing space for a small office with reading chair and desk. Optional living space is available on the second floor above the two bay garage, perfect for a private office, exercise area, or art studio.
