The design for the stately two-story gambrel was inspired by the Dwight House at historic Deerfield Massachusetts. Once the home of a wealthy Springfield merchant, it was moved to Deerfield in the 1950s and now stands as an example of early New England architecture. Our intent in developing this design was not to make an exact reproduction of the Dwight House but rather to capture its form, character and charm in a design for modern living. The two story front facade with its finely detailed trim and elegant front entry reflect a style typical of late 1700 architecture. Strict adherence to symmetry of windows, the front door and center chimney further develop its air of authenticity and formal character.

The same richness of detailing is used in the other elevations, but there I have taken greater latitude with window and door placement to enhance and complement the floor plan. The floor plan for this design is graciously open and free flowing. The rear wing houses the large gathering room, a sun porch, and the master bedroom suite on the second floor. A formal living room, dining room and five second and third floor bedrooms are located in the front wing.

The centrally located kitchen connector facilitates ease of service to both the front and rear wings. French doors from the kitchen, dining room, living room and sun porch bring light into the house and afford easy access to outdoor decks and patios. For exterior finish on this design I would suggest a white or off white paint or satin with a slightly darker tint color. The window sash can be painted with the trim color or a darker colonial color. Either case the front doors should be painted with a dark accent color. The roof should be sawn cedar shingles, slate, or slate colored asphalt.
