The intricacy and elegance of detailing on this home reflect the more ornate styling found in late 18 century saltboxes. Its nine window front façade with finely detailed chevron heads and ornate front entry are designed to create a formal street side appearance. Careful attention has been given to its scale and proportions and its chimney, windows and front entry door have been tastefully aligned and sized to further develop its air of formality.
From the side elevation, this home shows its classic saltbox form. On this elevation, a breezeway connector and two car carriage shed have been added to stretch the house out, increase its mass and create a greater presence on the site. The wood shed on the garage is functional and adds interest and human scale to the structure and its cupola plays off the verticality of the center chimney on the main house.

To maintain its air of formality, we would suggest a white or off-white paint or heavy body stain for the exterior. The major trim details should be finished with a slightly darker or tinted complimentary color and the window sash and doors in a dark “colonial” color. The roof should be done with sawn cedar shingles or an architectural asphalt shingle in a slate color. With the change in siding on the breezeway and carriage shed you have two finish options. You can use the same color scheme as the main house or you can use contrasting colors. For contrast, we would suggest a dark black-brown stain to imitate weathered barn board and the same “colonial” color for the window sash and doors.
