The symmetrical nine window front façade, center chimney and refined trim detailing place the Farmington Saltbox with homes built in the late 1700. Its side elevation is stretched laterally by two gable additions attached to the rear of the main house. A covered breezeway at right angles to the master bedroom wing provides a covered walkway to the carriage shed and creates an enclosed courtyard area for outdoor activities.

On the second floor, a large landing with two roof windows for natural light, affords access to three well proportioned bedrooms, a full bath and a loft/study that overlooks the gathering room below. The floor plan for this design is open, free flowing and spacious with both formal and informal family gathering areas. A large country kitchen with a walk-in pantry commands a central location in the first floor plan and is designed for ease of service to the formal dining room, living room, gathering room and outside courtyard area. The formal living room is graciously large with a fireplace for warmth and charm. The gathering room is open to the kitchen and provides a space for informal living. A large walk-in hearth with a fireplace, beehive oven and cooking grill gives warmth, ambiance and character to both the gathering room and kitchen and affords the adventurous homemaker an opportunity to try open hearth cooking.

Beyond the gathering room is the rear entry mud-room with a laundry and half bath and adjacent to this space is the master bedroom suite. The master suite is a well proportioned space with its own fireplace, a walk-in closet and a full bath with a shower and Jacuzzi tub. For exterior finish, we suggest a cream or off-white color for the siding and a trim color tinted slightly darker, a light painted finish will enhance the formality of the design. The window sash could be painted with the same trim color or for a more dramatic effect, with one of the dark “colonial colors”. The breezeway acts as a transition between the formal main house and less formal carriage shed. I envision both these structures being clad with vertical siding treated with the same color combination as the main house.
