The Saybrook Colonial Barn House design is in response to the many people I have spoken to over the years who have expressed an interest in a home with a barn appearance. Oftentimes, old barns are converted to residences, with mixed results in terms of achieving living spaces that really work. In designing the Saybrook, the primary emphasis was on creating a comfortable living space while achieving the look that so many folks find appealing. I believe the Saybrook Colonial succeeds in both categories. I hope you agree.
As you walk through the front entry door of the Saybrook, there is a boot bench to your right and a closet to the left. The entry way is semi-enclosed but could easily be converted to an air lock entry way if desired. Continuing past the entry way , to the right , is a large front to back Kitchen with potential for an eat in area/breakfast nook as drawn.
To the left of the entryway is the Living Room with a fireplace containing a wood box for conveniently storing wood. Beyond the Living Room at the rear of the Main House is the formal Dining Room which also has a fireplace and is open to the rear portion Kitchen, creating ample and comfortable circulation between the areas of food prep and serving.
At the second level of the Main House there are two Bedrooms with interesting windows and each Bedroom has its own fully equipped Bathroom.
To the left hand side of the Main House is the Master Suite which includes a fireplace ,sitting area, a glass door leading directly to the Patio ,a two sided walk-in closet, a bathroom with a large tub, shower, dual vanities and the toilet located behind a knee wall. In addition to the glass door leading to the Patio, there are four windows, two large and two small and a triple mulled clerestory window to flood the space with plenty of natural light.
Moving back to the rear of the Main House, off of the Kitchen, is the Mudroom. The Mudroom has a Laundry Room and a half Bath to the left and a closet and boot bench to the right. There are two four light, two panel doors in the Mudroom. The one to the left leads to the Patio area and the one to the right leads to a Farmer’s Porch.
Beyond and connected to the Mudroom is the two car Carriage Shed. The Basement can be directly accessed from the Carriage Shed. There is an Additional Living Space at the second level and the walls surrounding the staircase leading up to it are insulated, connecting the insulated spaces throughout the house.
The exterior of the house is clapboarded with barn sash throughout and there are sliding barn doors at the Main House and Carriage Shed. Barn lamps are used at the front entryway and at the Carriage Shed in addition to carriage lamps.
