The West River Cottage is traditionally scaled for the prospective client that is looking for a small home with character. The first floor plan has an undercut covered entryway. As you enter the front door, the plan is open to above to add volume to the space. Above the entry is a dormer to bring in natural light. To the right of the entry is a half bath for convenience. The Living Room lies to the left, which has a fireplace and plenty of windows to bring in natural light and ventilation.
To the rear of the building, beyond the Living Room is the Dining Room with a bay window / window seat. The fireplace in the Living Room can be seen at any angle from the dining space.
To the right of the dining space is a modest but fully equipped Kitchen with plenty of glass for light and ventilation. The Kitchen also contains the Basement access door.
The second level of the cottage was designed with the idea that some folks may choose to build the main building as a stand-alone structure. At the second level there are two very modestly sized Bedrooms and a shared full bath that befits this design.
The longer version of the West River Cottage has a Mudroom off of the Kitchen/Dining Area with a side by side washer/dryer closet, a bench and a closet.
In this longer version, beyond the mudroom, there is a Master Suite with a cathedral ceiling, walk-in closets and a Master Bath with a soaking tub, large shower, and a double vanity.
In addition to the above mentioned, the longer version of this cottage has a two car Carriage Shed which occurs beyond the Master Bath. The Carriage Shed has a considerable space at the second level with mulled transom windows on the gable ends and two dog house dormers along the length of the space to bring in additional light and ventilation. This space would make a great studio, recreation room, etc.
Some ideas that would add character to this building could be a cedar shingled roof, a mix of cedar clapboards and shingles for siding, a brick or stone veneer at the above grade portion of the foundation wall, tall interior wainscoting and possibly an exterior fireplace on the outside of the fireplace as drawn.
